Over the years, I have tried many different action camera and microphone setups. Below are links to what I am using now. This is the easiest setup I have ever used while also giving me the best results.
Two wireless mics automatically sync with the action camera. One mic records on the left channel, and the other records on the right. In post-production, you can eliminate one and "fill" the stereo sound with a duplicate of the channel you prefer, or you can duplicate both in stereo.
The first microphone is mounted inside the helmet near my comms mic. The second microphone is placed inside a wind sock/dead cat and strapped on top of the emergency kit to capture the motorcycle's exhaust sound. I can moto-vlog at the same time as filming a pure-sound video without needing to film the ride twice.
This is a long way from when I had to wire a Sony bullet camera into the nose of my R6 and connect it to a PV-500 SD DVR. I have used countless GoPro cameras on race cars and motorcycles, but the dual external wireless mic setup with the DJI camera provides top-level performance.
The juggling act now is finding the best mic location to capture the exhaust note while minimizing the Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) of the motorcycle and road noise. We discover the best locations through this series of Pure Sound videos.
